When Adversity Strikes: How to respond in times of trouble

Why Me, Lord?

Have you ever wondered why you go through certain trials? Or why sometimes difficulties just keep piling on, testing your patience and even your faith? It is because God is at work in you. The challenges of life are always present, but how you see them and respond makes the difference.

Already you are in a frame of mind where you want to see good things happen, rather than negative, painful things. There are some who have not reached that point. Your desire for good is God’s prevenient grace working to refine that spark of light, into a blazing fire of His glorious Holy Spirit in you and through you.

Don’t Run Away!

If you try to avoid these trials and difficulties through distractions or evasive behavior, you may miss the refining work God is trying to accomplish in you. Some of the most powerful testimonies come from those who have been through the fire, and yet persevered, into victories God had for them, greater than they ever thought possible.

The Apostle Paul teaches us in Philippians 4:6 not to worry about anything, but rather pray about everything, telling God what we need and thanking Him for all He is doing, even in the trials.

What Can I Do?

I would encourage you, of course, not to just let bad things happen. You can and should take an active role facing difficult circumstances. However, you can stay focused on God and His plan, through prayer, fellowship with other Christ followers, and thanking God for all He has done, is doing, and will still do in your life.

In this way, you can persevere through the challenges, as God continues to refine you and shape you into the strong, beautiful instrument of His love and grace, which He created you to be.

In Christ,
Tim Grubbs
